In the typical Don Simpson-Jerry Bruckheimer mould(the partnership yielded Top Gun and Days of Thunder, among many other films), this 1995 drama is a combination of one-dimensional but enjoyable performances, lots of high-tech nonsense taking place onscreen, and mechanistic movie-making at its loudest and most seizure-inducing. Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington play nuclear submarine officers squaring off over the former's apparent intention to do some unauthorized damage to an enemy. Tony Scott (Top Gun) directed, bringing his lustre and pop commercial sense to go with all that Simpson-Bruckheimer eye candy. --Tom Keogh

  • Eraser [1996]Eraser | DVD | (29/03/1999) from £6.35   |  Saving you £7.64 (120.31%)   |  RRP £13.99

If you're going to submit yourself to a dazzling example of mainstream action, this thriller is as good a choice as any. Eraser is a live-action cartoon, the kind of movie in which Arnold Schwarzenegger can survive nail bombs, hails of bullets, an attack by voracious alligators ("You're luggage," he says, after killing one of the beasts), and still emerge from the mayhem relatively intact. Arnold plays an "eraser" from the Federal Witness Protection Program, so named because he can virtually erase the existence of anyone he's been assigned to protect. His latest beneficiary is an FBI employee (Vanessa Williams) who stumbled across a secret government group involved in the sale and export of an advanced weapon capable of shooting rounds at nearly the speed of light. Fantastic action sequences are handled with flair by director Charles Russell (The Mask), so it's easy to forgive the fact that this movie is almost completely ridiculous. --Jeff Shannon

This performance captured in Vienna in April 2005 of Donizetti's Elisir d'Amore was an absolute sensation no doubt due to the casting which brought together Rolando Villazn and Anna Netrebko in the title roles. The DVD highlights not only Rolando Villazn as the great tenor he is becoming but also allows you to see the full extent of his talents as an actor. It also introduces on Virgin Classics the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko with whom Rolando has often performed. The production by Otto Schenk although traditional in character carries the story with charm and wit.
